Defining the Objectives
GSC brings over forty years of experience consulting with small and large organizations, helping them attain safer outcomes.
We begin by first identifying the target objectives. Once the objectives are clear, we work with you to identify gaps and barriers to success. Then we are ready to develop an intervention strategy. This approach ensures each step you take in your journey is targeted and gives your organization the greatest probability of success. No project is too small, from an assessment of incident data to implementation of a Serious Injury and Fatality prevention system.
Understanding the Gaps
It is difficult to understand and evaluate culture and systems from within. When the evaluator is part of the organization, there can be pressure to avoid talking about highly sensitive or controversial topics, or the person is concerned to “tell it like it is” because they fear it will interfere with their career.
We can help evaluate your culture and systems, to uncover those factors aligned with the safety and organizational objectives and those that are hindering people from doing what is necessary to protect themselves or others.
Developing Transformational EHS Leaders
Are your EHS leaders having the desired influence? It is too easy for EHS leaders to become transactional in their approach. The role of an EHS resource is to enable leaders to successfully fulfill their safety leadership responsibilities.
To be a transformational EHS leader, the person must understand:
their and other people’s biases
how to interpret and present data
incident causation
the hierarchy of control
the four characteristics of transformational leadership
how to influence
Having worked with hundreds of EHS leaders, we can help.
Employee Engagement
Want to be world-class in safety? One requirement for that designation is an engaged workforce. We are not talking about a safety participation trophy, but true engagement. Employee engagement comes in a wide variety of forms. Engaging employees requires opportunities that consider cultural maturity. When an organization’s culture is toward the low end of compliance the journey to engagement often starts with participation activities, like hazard hunts. As safety maturity moves toward commitment higher-level safety engagement activities like peer-to-peer observations can be introduced.
We can help you evaluate and enhance your current employee engagement activities or recommend new ones.
Incident Investigation
Have you ever read an incident report and still had the questions: why did people make the decisions they made, or will the actions taken really prevent recurrence? If so, the incident investigation was incomplete and/or the actions were solely focused on fixing the employee.
We can help you improve your investigations. How incident investigations are conducted and the level of justice in the process are a bell weather for creating employee beliefs about how serious the organization is about their safety.
We can also help lead investigations. There are times when an organization wants an outside set of eyes to help understand why an incident happened. While we are systematic in our approach to the investigation, we are not limited to a specific investigation model.
Preventing Life-Altering Incidents
The handful of exposures that will result in life-altering incidents are likely well known to your organization. Additionally, how these exposures will manifest themselves, is general knowledge. In many cases, people know what must be done to ensure the exposure is controlled. Yet, life-altering injuries happen, even in organizations with exceptional safety performance.
We help organizations install a system that allows leaders to quickly and reliably identify incidents with SIF potential. We also assist with establishing metrics related to SIF prevention efforts. Finally, we help the organization develop exposure control plans that proactively identify SIF hazards and exposures and ensure lifesaving procedures are utilized.
